Beyond Automation Series: The Shift to Agentic Systems - Part 1: A Future Memory

It began almost imperceptibly in 2025.

My team in Advanced Operations deployed a handful of agentic systems for low-stakes tasks, automated tendering, supply chain reconciliation, regulatory filings. It was experimental, quiet.

But when an agent we nicknamed "Mercer" independently closed a €280M renewables joint venture in Norway, without decks, execs, or politics, the organization felt its first real tremor. Our departing CEO signed off on what many thought was madness: Project Delta. Its mission was to phase out middle management not through outsourcing, but by replacing it with orchestrated agent systems, a blend of technical re-architecture, process atomization, and AI-driven overlays.

By 2027, procurement and contract management were fully agent-run, and compliance teams vanished, replaced by self-auditing agent trails regulators came to trust. Our headcount plummeted from 12,000 to 200. The following year, we spun off our manufacturing and logistics arms as autonomous agent-led cooperatives. The core company, now focused on IP, capital, and AI governance, merged codebases with a data infrastructure firm. By Q3 2029, we had eliminated 97% of workflow redundancy and rebranded as WGT Core.

The press called us the "Three-Body Corporation”, a nod to the fact that only three human staff remained. That’s me, former CTO, now systems guardian. Alex manages regulatory and investor interfaces, and Jules ensures our ethics scale with our ambition. Everything else is handled by a dynamic mesh of 4,200 agents, adaptive, objective-driven, and costless beyond compute. Our annual revenue has crossed $20.3 billion. Earnings calls? Our CFO agent publishes them in markdown on-chain.

People often ask, “What happened to your workforce?” Many became owners, founders, or contributors to ventures backed by WGT Core. Some struggled. But the company didn’t collapse. It evolved…quietly, deliberately, until it simply stepped out of its old skin.

This story presents a vivid future memory of a $20 billion corporation, a streamlined titan powered by intelligence, not headcount. To some, this will feel inspirational, to other, they will worry if their jobs will be the ones to go.

We will be sharing our views and tackling some of the debate around AI in this next series, where we will breakdown what agentic systems really are, how they’re being implemented today, and what they could mean for the future of work. We’ll explore the real-world shifts already underway, from job redesign to organizational models and hear from leaders, builders, and skeptics alike. Venturebright will dive into the trade-offs, the transformations, and the emerging playbooks for navigating a world where intelligence scales faster than headcount ever could.
